Four matches, four straight-sets wins, capped by a 6-1, 6-4 dismissal of the 13th seed Naomi Osaka in the fourth round that was as one-sided as that scoreline reads. This is her first US Open quarter-final, which completes a full set: she has now reached the last eight at all four majors.
The stakes are unusual for a quarter-final. If she wins this match she becomes the highest-ranked woman in the world for the first time, taking the No. 1 spot from Sabalenka regardless of what the Belarusian does in the top half. Qinwen Zheng

Her fortnight has been the most dramatic of anyone’s. In the third round against the 22nd seed Madison Keys she saved a match point while trailing 5-0 in the deciding set and won. In the fourth round against the eighth seed Iga Swiatek she lost the first five games of the match, then won the next seven to take the set and closed it out 7-5, 6-3. Coming back from 5-0 once is a story; doing it twice in four days is a competitive trait. This is her first Grand Slam quarter-final since her run at the French Open last year.
