The fourth seed has been the most efficient player in the bottom half. Four matches, four straight-sets wins, no set closer than a tiebreak that never came — the third round against Cristina Bucsa was 6-4, 7-6(5) and the fourth round against the 14th seed Iva Jovic was a 6-1, 6-4 dismissal of a fellow American. She won the title in Cincinnati coming into this tournament, so the hard-court form was already established before she arrived.
The context that matters: this is her first US Open quarter-final since the 2023 run that made her a Grand Slam champion at 19. She is 22 now, and she has spoken about this being a match that will “come down to the wire.” She is not treating the seeding gap as decisive, and neither should the market.

Mirra Andreeva
Andreeva is a Grand Slam champion already. She won Roland Garros earlier this year at 19, and that title changes how you read her in a match like this: she has been through the pressure of a major final and come out the other side of it, which is more than most of the players left in this draw can say.
Her week has been solid rather than spectacular. She beat Janice Tjen, Eva Lys and Nikola Bartunkova to reach the second week, then had her first real test against the 24th seed Anastasia Potapova and came through it 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 after losing the opening set. That is a useful data point in both directions — she got broken down early and she reset. It is also her deepest run at this tournament, which means she is in unfamiliar territory in a way Gauff is not.

The head-to-head is the number that should shape the price. Gauff has won all five of their previous meetings, including on this court in 2023 and on clay in Madrid last year. Five straight is a meaningful sample between two players who have grown up on tour together, and it suggests a genuine stylistic edge rather than a run of good scheduling: Gauff’s movement and depth off the forehand ask Andreeva to generate her own pace, and that is the part of Andreeva’s game that is still developing.
What complicates it is that most of those five meetings predate Andreeva’s French Open title. She is a different, more finished player than the one who lost most of them. If you think the record is stale, this is the match to say so — but say it through the set handicap rather than the outright, because the market has almost certainly priced the 5-0 in.
