Alexander Zverev
The top seed won Roland Garros this year, which changed the way he gets talked about, and his 2026 has a statistical distinction nobody else can claim: he is the only man to reach the quarter-finals at all four majors this season. The one gap on his record is this tournament — he has never won the US Open.
His fourth round was the most professional performance of the round. He beat the 21st seed Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3) in two hours and 31 minutes, landing 72 per cent of first serves and winning 86 per cent of the points behind them. That is his blueprint working exactly as designed. It is worth noting that the tournament has not been uniformly smooth: he needed five sets to get past Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round and five again against Alejandro Tabilo in the third. When Zverev is on serve he is nearly unplayable; when he is not, he stays on court a long time.

Botic van de Zandschulp
The 30-year-old Dutchman, ranked No. 70, has produced the best fortnight of anyone outside the seedings. His second round was a straight-sets dismissal of the sixth seed Alex de Minaur, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 — no tiebreaks, no drama, a top-ten player taken apart. He then needed five sets to beat Zizou Bergs and five more, and five hours and 13 minutes, to survive Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 7-6(3), 6-4 after saving a match point from two sets down.
That is the double edge of his week. He is clearly playing at a level well above his ranking and he has proven he will not fold. He has also spent more time on court than any other man left in the draw, and 13 sets of tennis including two five-setters is a serious tax to pay before a quarter-final against the top seed. He is a clean, flat-hitting all-court player with a dependable serve — the profile that traditionally troubles Zverev is exactly this, a man who takes the ball early and refuses to be pushed around from the baseline.

Key Betting Angles
We are not going to invent a head-to-head narrative here — this is not a rivalry with a meaningful sample on hard courts, and the analysis has to be about styles and legs instead. On style, Zverev should win. His serve is the best in the match by a distance, he has the depth off the ground to keep van de Zandschulp behind the baseline, and he has the experience of six previous major semi-final campaigns to draw on when a set gets tight.
On legs, the gap is enormous and it is the reason this market may be shorter than it should be. Van de Zandschulp has played five sets twice in four days. Zverev has played five sets twice as well, which is worth noting honestly, but his fourth round was a 90-minute-shorter afternoon than his opponent’s marathon and he had the same rest day. Fatigue arguments cut both ways in a best-of-five, and the player who is tired but has already proven he can win from two sets down is a genuinely awkward opponent.
The most attractive market is the total games line. Zverev matches tend to be long even when he wins comfortably — three of his four this fortnight went the distance or to a tiebreak — and van de Zandschulp does not get blown off court. The under would need a very quick, very clean Zverev afternoon to land.

Cole’s Pick: Alexander Zverev to win in four sets
The serve, the ranking gap and the fresher body all point one way, and Zverev has been the more efficient player over the second week. Back the top seed to reach the semi-finals. What we would not do is take the straight-sets price: van de Zandschulp has beaten a top-ten player already in this tournament and has twice shown he will drag a set into a tiebreak. Four sets, with the over on total games, is the way to play it.
