The Lavalloise has been ruthlessly efficient. She opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Zhang Shuai and followed it with 6-4, 6-1 against Mananchaya Sawangkaew — 11 games conceded across two matches, and no time spent on court that she did not need to spend. In the second round she converted six of eight break points, saved six of the nine she faced, and finished the match with an ace on her first match point.

That is the third time she has reached the third round in New York, and the profile of the win matters as much as the result. Her serve got her out of a 15-40 hole at a critical moment in the second set and she did not blink when she had a lead to protect, which has not always been true of her. As a left-hander who takes the return early and redirects the ball into awkward corners, she is genuinely uncomfortable to face on a quick court — and she has more evidence of performing at this specific venue than her ranking suggests.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula has been even more brutal. She beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-2 in round one and then took 56 minutes to dismantle Sofia Kenin, a former Australian Open champion, 6-3, 6-1 in the first match on Arthur Ashe. “To be out of there in under an hour, it doesn’t always happen,” she said afterwards. “So I think I’m just going to take that one and run.”

She is the third seed and ranked third in the world, and she was the runner-up here in 2024, which makes her the most credible American title threat left in the draw alongside the higher seeds. Her game is the awkward answer to Fernandez’s: exceptionally clean off both wings, very few free errors, and a returning depth that takes away the short, redirected ball the Canadian likes to build points from. She has held the edge in their previous hard-court meetings.

Take Pegula to advance, but take her to be made to work for it — a straight-sets price here looks short.
