Carlos Alcaraz returns to singles competition for the first time in more than four months, defending a US Open title with no warm-up matches behind him, and the draw has handed him Roman Safiullin, a man who has beaten him before. Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz won the Australian Open at the start of this season, then picked up a right wrist problem during the European clay swing that cost him Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and most of the North American hard-court summer. He arrives in New York as the No. 2 seed with no competitive singles matches behind him, which is an extraordinary way to defend a Grand Slam title.

The mitigation is that he has won this tournament twice, in 2022 and again last year, and Flushing Meadows suits him as well as any venue on the calendar. Expect variety rather than raw power early on: drop shots, changes of pace and trips to the net are the low-cost ways to win points while the timing comes back.

Roman Safiullin

Safiullin is close to the worst possible draw for a player short of match sharpness. He hits flat and hard off both wings, takes time away from opponents and has genuine firepower when he finds his range. He is also not intimidated by this particular opponent: he beat Alcaraz in straight sets at the 2023 Paris Masters, and although the Spaniard won their meeting at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the earlier result is on the record.

His form is real too. Safiullin reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this summer before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. That is a player in decent shape running into an opponent who has not played since April.

Key Betting Angles

This is the classic case where the match-winner market and the set-betting market are telling different stories. Alcaraz will still be a heavy favourite over five sets and probably should be. But the price on him winning in straight sets deserves far more scepticism than usual, because rust shows up as loose service games and misjudged shot selection long before it shows up as a loss.

The games total is the cleanest expression of that. A rusty former champion working his way in, against an opponent who holds serve well, is a recipe for a longer match than the pre-tournament narrative suggests. His section is brutal beyond this too, with Arthur Fils or Ben Shelton projected in the round of 16 and a possible semi-final against Djokovic, so anything spent tonight is spent twice.

Talent and Grand Slam experience should get Alcaraz through, and best-of-five gives him time to solve a problem he cannot solve in the first twenty minutes. But backing him to do it comfortably ignores everything we know about players returning from long layoffs. Take the winner, take the over, and leave the straight-sets handicap alone entirely.
