Team Analysis

Coventry City

Frank Lampard’s Coventry City ran away with the Championship title last season and went straight into the toughest possible opener, a trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal. The Sky Blues used the summer to add Premier League experience, most notably midfielder Frank Onyeka from Brentford and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton, but they are still without defender Luke Woolfenden through injury. This is the kind of home fixture, against a fellow newly-promoted side rather than an established top-half club, that Lampard’s squad was built to target for points.

Key Storyline: Coventry’s first realistic chance to bank points at home after a brutal trip to the Emirates in Matchweek 1

Hull City

Hull City ended a nine-year top-flight exile by beating Middlesbrough in the playoff final at Wembley, with Oli McBurnie the difference-maker, and manager Sergej Jakirović wasted no time reinforcing the spine of the squad. The Tigers broke their transfer record for goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos, added experienced backup Jack Butland from Rangers, and brought in midfielders Hidemasa Morita and Oscar Zambrano to add some know-how to a squad short on Premier League experience. Hull also had to sell a couple of fringe players before the PSR deadline to stay compliant, a reminder of the financial tightrope newly promoted clubs walk. Their opener at home to Manchester United was always going to be a tall order.

Key Storyline: Hull’s club-record goalkeeper signing Konstantinos Tzolakis faces his first real away test after a daunting opener against Manchester United

Key Betting Angles

Games between two newly promoted sides in their second Premier League match of the season tend to be cagey and low-scoring, with both managers desperate not to be the team that loses momentum in what both view as a winnable fixture. Expect a tight midfield battle and fewer clear-cut chances than either side’s opener produced. The under markets and both-teams-to-score-no line up as more interesting angles here than backing either side outright.

Our Prediction

Cole’s Pick: Draw

Neither side showed enough in their opening-weekend gauntlet to make a confident case for backing them to win outright, and games between two promoted clubs desperate for their first points of the season are usually tight, nervy affairs. Coventry’s home advantage and extra Premier League readiness give them a slight edge, but this looks like a genuine coin-flip that could easily end level.

Confidence: medium on a low-scoring, tight contest; low on picking an outright winner
