Toronto hosts the women’s half of the National Bank Open this year, with 96 players in the singles field and 72 of the WTA Tour’s top 75 entered. Main draw play opens August 2, and the tournament’s 32 seeds get their first matches starting August 4. Aryna Sabalenka
The world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion is making her seventh trip to Canada, and she arrives as the default favourite in almost any field she enters. Her hard-court results over the past two seasons make Toronto’s surface a natural fit.
Elena Rybakina
Ranked No. 2 and fresh off a second Grand Slam title earlier this year, Rybakina’s serve-first game translates well to a fast North American hard court and gives Sabalenka the clearest threat in the top half of any likely draw.
Victoria Mboko (defending champion)
Mboko became the first Canadian woman to win the singles title in Montreal or Toronto last year, beating three Grand Slam champions, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka, en route to the trophy as an 18-year-old. Defending in front of a home crowd carries its own pressure, but nobody in this field has more recent evidence they can beat the very best.
Jessica Pegula
A two-time former Toronto champion (2023, 2024) before Mboko’s breakthrough last year, Pegula has a track record in this specific event that few players in the draw can match.
Bianca Andreescu & Venus Williams (wild cards)
Andreescu, Canada’s 2019 NBO champion, and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams both received main-draw wild cards, giving the home fans two extra storylines regardless of what the seeding ultimately does.
