France’s tournament ended the way it started for most of the summer – comfortably, until it suddenly wasn’t. A 3-0 win over Sweden in the Round of 32, a 1-0 win over Paraguay (Mbappé pen, 70′), and a 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco all came without much late drama, but the semi-final against Spain was their first match all tournament without a goal. Kylian Mbappé is level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race on eight goals, and Saturday is his last opportunity to add to that tally before Sunday’s final is played without him.
Third-place playoffs are notorious for rotated lineups and low motivation, and France have nothing left to play for except pride and Mbappé’s personal tally.

England
England leaned on comebacks all tournament – a 2-1 win over Congo DR, a 3-2 fightback against Mexico, a 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway that also required a late goal – before falling into the same trap against Argentina, conceding twice in the final six minutes of the semi-final having led through Anthony Gordon. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are both on six goals for the tournament, two behind England’s Round of 16 pace but a solid return regardless.
Like France, England have nothing tangible to play for beyond a result to end the tournament on, and Thomas Tuchel is expected to rotate his squad after a physically demanding run to the last four.

Third-place playoffs are the hardest matches of any World Cup to price. Squads are tired, morale is mixed, and managers often use the game to give fringe players minutes rather than to chase a result – all of which tends to depress the goals markets and open up the draw and both-teams-to-score angles.
Mbappé’s incentive to add to his Golden Boot tally is the one clear exception to the “nobody cares” theory of third-place playoffs. Expect France to play him close to the full 90 minutes even if other starters are rested.
