The hosts are through to a home-soil Round of 16 the way most people expected: comfortably, if not spectacularly. Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman scored either side of halftime to beat Bosnia 2-0, and the performance had the hallmarks of a team that knows exactly what it is under Mauricio Pochettino — compact out of possession, quick to transition, patient enough to wait for the space Christian Pulisic and Tillman thrive in. Matt Turner has not been troubled often, and the centre-back pairing has been organized without needing to be spectacular.
What the USA have not done yet is beat a genuinely elite side in this tournament. Belgium, even in the muddled, transitional version they have shown so far, are a different class of opponent to anything the Americans have faced in the group stage or against Bosnia. Pulisic is the one player capable of manufacturing something from nothing, and Weston McKennie’s late runs into the box give the USA an extra goal threat that a lot of teams do not account for. The USA, at home, with a crowd behind them and nothing to lose, are live underdogs in the truest sense of the phrase.
I expect Belgium to take an early lead through their superior individual quality, only for the USA to find a route back into the game before halftime through Pulisic or a set piece. From there it is a coin flip. Belgium’s bench and tournament pedigree edge it in extra time or penalties, but this has the feel of a match that could go either way in the closing stages.
If you want the safest angle, both teams to score covers the most realistic version of how this plays out. If you want value, USA to win in 90 minutes at longer odds is live given how shaky Belgium have looked, but treat it as exactly that — a value play, not the base case.
