Team Analysis

Canada vs Morocco Analysis

Canada

Canada arrive at their first-ever Round of 16 on the back of three performances that tell you exactly what this team is. They demolished Qatar 6-0 at BC Place with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick. They went to Vancouver two days later and showed another side of themselves – grinding, organised, dangerous in transition – before losing 2-1 to Switzerland in a game that was tighter than the score suggests. And then in Los Angeles on June 28, Stephen Eustaquio – who started the tournament with muscle tightness and was a doubt for the Round of 32 – scored in the 92nd minute at SoFi Stadium to send Canada through against South Africa.

Jonathan David has three goals in four games. He scored a hat-trick, scored in the group stage, and was the constant threat against South Africa even when he didn’t get on the sheet. He is the best striker in this tournament not playing for a European elite club. Wait – he does play for a European elite club. He starts for Juventus. Alphonso Davies is fit and contributing from left back. Eustaquio’s 92nd-minute winner against South Africa means his confidence is through the roof. This Canada side has momentum.

The one concern is midfield depth. Ismaël Koné is out for the tournament with a broken leg sustained against Qatar. That limits Jesse Marsch’s options in central areas. Against a Morocco side that presses aggressively, Canada will need Eustaquio to be at his physical best for 90+ minutes.

Morocco

They did it in 2022 and they’re doing it again. Morocco came through Group C with seven points, beating Haiti 4-2, drawing with Scotland, and showing enough to suggest Walid Regragui has them exactly where he wants them. Then on June 30, they eliminated the Netherlands – 1-1 after extra time, 3-2 on penalties. The Netherlands had beaten Morocco in the 2022 group stage. Regragui got the rematch and won it.

Morocco are not just a defensive side who grind out results. Sofiane Boufal has been their creative spark from the left; Youssef En-Nesyri leads the line with energy and aerial threat. Their defensive structure is the best-organised in this tournament outside of the traditional giants. They press from the front, win the ball high up the pitch, and are lethal on the counter. Canada will feel that pressure.

The history speaks for itself. Morocco reached the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Four years on, the core of that squad is still here, more experienced, and with the belief that they belong at this level. They are not underdogs in this game. Most books have them as slight favourites.

Key Betting Angles

What to Know Before You Bet

Morocco are the better-priced side and that’s justified. They eliminated the Netherlands in the Round of 32, they’ve been to a World Cup semi-final, and Regragui’s defensive structure is elite. Canada have done incredible things but Morocco are a different proposition to South Africa or Qatar.

Jonathan David is the x-factor. Morocco’s defensive centre-backs are excellent at the 2022 vintage. But David is playing the football of his life. He has three goals in four games. South Africa tried to handle him and couldn’t. If Morocco give him even half a chance, he will take it.

Under 2.5 goals is a genuine play. Morocco have conceded twice in five games at this tournament. Canada conceded once before the knockout rounds. Both teams are disciplined and organized. A tight knockout game decided by one moment – a David finish, an En-Nesyri set-piece, a penalty – is the most likely scenario.

Canada to advance (including extra time and penalties) is the value line. At 1.75, this accounts for the knockout format where Canada don’t have to win in 90 minutes. They have shown they can grind results out. Eustaquio scored in the 92nd minute in the last round. Jesse Marsch will set his side up to be hard to break down and look to nick it on the break through David.

Alphonso Davies and the wide spaces. Morocco pushed the Netherlands hard but gave up space on the right side of their defence. Davies bombing forward from left back will be Canada’s most dangerous attacking weapon if they can win it quickly and transition. Watch the wide market and the assists market for Davies. Our Prediction

Canada vs Morocco Prediction

This one is going to be an absolute war. Morocco are not a side you beat easily and they have the quality to hurt Canada. Regragui will set up in a deep block, let Canada have the ball, and look to spring En-Nesyri and Boufal on the counter. Canada will have moments – Davies will get forward, David will demand the ball – but Morocco’s defensive discipline is the hardest test this Canadian generation has ever faced.

The most likely scenario is tight. Morocco edge it in 90 minutes on a single moment of quality – a set-piece, a counter-attack, something that doesn’t come from sustained pressure. But Canada have shown they can come back. They showed it against South Africa. They showed it against Switzerland when they pulled one back through David. And in a penalty shoot-out, with Milan Borjan in goal and Canada’s squad full of players who have taken penalties at the highest level, this is genuinely 50-50.

Canada go out on pens, narrowly, in one of the best games of the tournament. But this generation – David, Davies, Eustaquio – will have shown the world what they are. If they do go through, the quarter-finals are not a fantasy. This is the biggest game Canadian football has ever played.

Top Pick

Canada to Advance (incl. ET & pens)   1.75

Canada beat South Africa in the 92nd minute. They know how to find a way. At 1.75 to advance in any format, this is the cleanest way to back them. Available at Betovo.

Value Bet

Under 2.5 Goals   ~1.80

Morocco conceded twice in five games at this tournament. Canada conceded once before the knockout rounds. Both defensive units are among the best in the competition. A tense, low-scoring knockout game is the most likely outcome here.

Longshot

Jonathan David Anytime Scorer   ~2.50

Three goals in the tournament. The hat-trick against Qatar. The constant threat against South Africa. Morocco’s defensive record is excellent but David is a different class of striker to anything they’ve faced in this tournament. He only needs one chance.
