Vegas open their season as the reigning Western Conference champions, and the franchise has never treated a home opener as anything less than an event. What has defined this group is depth rather than a single line: four forward groups that can be trusted with real minutes, a blue line that moves the puck cleanly and a willingness to play a heavy game when required. Against a younger opponent, the Golden Knights should be able to lean on that depth as the game wears into the third period.

Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago start their season on the road at the end of a long opening-night slate, which is a tough draw for a young roster. The realistic road plan is to stay out of the penalty box, get a strong performance from the netminder and try to turn the game into a low-event affair where one or two skill plays can decide it.

This is the largest talent gap on the opening-night slate, which usually means the moneyline is short enough that the puck line becomes the interesting market. The counterargument is that October is when depth advantages matter least, because everybody is fresh and nobody is fatigued from travel yet. A young team with a hot goaltender can absolutely keep this within a goal into the third period. Vegas’s power play against a Chicago penalty kill still finding its footing is the most likely source of separation.

Depth, home ice and the confidence of a team that reached the Cup Final last spring all point the same direction. Chicago have the skill to make this uncomfortable for a period, but over 60 minutes the Golden Knights should control the shots on goal and win the special-teams battle. A one-goal margin with an empty-net insurance marker is a very plausible shape for this one.
