Nathan MacKinnon is the engine of everything Colorado do, and Ball Arena in the first week of a season is about as favourable a setting as he gets. The Avalanche play at a tempo few teams can match, using speed through the neutral zone to turn defensive-zone recoveries into odd-man rushes in a matter of seconds. Add the altitude, which visitors traditionally feel most in the third period, and Colorado’s style becomes even more punishing over 60 minutes.

Los Angeles Kings
Artemi Panarin brings his playmaking to a Kings side that has historically been built on defensive structure and controlled, low-event hockey. On the road at altitude, the Kings will want to slow the game down, defend the blue line aggressively and give Panarin the puck in space when it turns over.

The altitude angle is well known and largely priced in, but it still shows up in the third period, and it is a bigger factor in the opening week than later in the year when road teams have their legs. MacKinnon at home, at altitude, in the first week of a season is a difficult combination to bet against. The Kings have the structure to keep this close for two periods and Panarin is capable of creating something out of nothing, but Colorado’s speed should eventually stretch a Los Angeles defence still finding its rhythm. Look for the home side to pull away late rather than early.
