This is exactly the kind of early-season fixture where a promoted side’s home atmosphere can outweigh the gap in squad quality. Hull have invested sensibly and will have a raucous MKM Stadium behind them, while Villa arrive with a genuinely threadbare group in midfield and attack after the Super Cup injuries piled on top of the Rogers and Tielemans exits. Villa’s individual quality should still count for something, but this looks like a spot where the total goals market is worth more attention than the result market, given how unsettled both sides look physically right now.

Villa’s squad on paper is still stronger, but stronger on paper hasn’t meant much for Emery’s group this preseason. Between Onana’s long-term loss, Garnacho and Manzambi both short of match sharpness, and now Gomes and Madjo added to the treatment table, this is about as depleted as Villa can be walking into a road trip against a promoted side with a genuine home-field boost. Hull won’t be overawed after the way they came up, and we like their chances of grabbing a point here.
