Canada’s women’s national curling championship heads to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from February 12 to 21, 2027. The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is the biggest week in Canadian women’s curling, it decides who represents the country at the world championship, and it is one of the more genuinely bettable events on the Canadian winter calendar – once the field exists. Books price the Scotties by team rather than by province once the entries are known, which is generally in the first week of February. Nobody knows which rinks will carry these banners in 2027 yet.
Charlottetown, February 12–21
Prince Edward Island hosts the 2027 Scotties, which is a notable draw for the smallest province in the country and guarantees a full building for a ten-day event. Atlantic Canada consistently turns out for curling, and a Scotties in Charlottetown will be a strong week for the sport regardless of who is playing.
For a bettor, the venue itself is less important than the calendar position. Mid-February puts the Scotties immediately after the provincial and territorial playdowns and two weeks before the Brier, which means it arrives with fresh, verifiable information about which teams are actually playing well. That is very different from the Grand Slam season opener in October, and it makes the Scotties one of the better-informed markets in Canadian curling.
Format and How Teams Qualify
The Scotties is the Canadian women’s championship and, in recent editions, has been contested by the provincial and territorial champions alongside a defending Team Canada entry and wild-card teams, split into two pools for the round robin with a championship round and playoff to follow. Curling Canada confirms the exact field size and structure for each edition, so treat the shape as familiar rather than fixed.
Qualification is the key thing to understand. Almost every entry earns its place by winning a provincial or territorial playdown in January. That is a genuine, competitive, single-elimination-style pressure test, and it means the Scotties field is composed of teams that have just won something – not teams invited on ranking.
The practical consequence for betting is important. Strong rinks miss the Scotties every single year because they lost their provincial. A team can be one of the best in the country and simply not be there. Conversely, a lower-profile rink that peaks at the right moment in January is in the national championship. Do not assume the best teams in Canada will all be in Charlottetown, because structurally they will not be.
The winner earns the right to represent Canada at the world championship and returns to the following year’s Scotties as the Team Canada entry.
What Canadian Bettors Should Know
Three things separate the Scotties from a Grand Slam event as a betting proposition.
The field is uneven by design. Every province and territory gets a place regardless of depth, which means the round robin contains genuine mismatches alongside genuine contests. Outright markets reflect that with a small cluster of short prices and a very long tail. Match markets in the early draws can be heavily one-sided.
The round robin is long. A ten-day national championship with a substantial round robin rewards consistency far more than a compressed Slam weekend does. Variance still exists – it is curling – but a team has time to recover from one bad draw. That makes the outright a more reliable bet here than at a Slam.
Information is good. By February you have a full autumn of Grand Slam and tour results, plus the provincial playdowns, on which to assess every team in the field. This is the opposite of an October season opener. If you are going to bet curling seriously in one week of the year, this is a strong candidate.
Curling Betting Markets for Newcomers
Event outright. Backing a team to win the Scotties. Available once the field is confirmed in early February.
Match winner. A single game, two-way. Tied games go to an extra end, so there is no draw to account for. This is the most liquid curling market and the main in-play option.
Hammer and first-end advantage. The hammer is last-stone advantage in an end and it matters a great deal. The team holding it is trying to score two or more; the team without it is trying to force a single or steal. Hammer passes to the other team after you score, which is why teams sometimes blank an end deliberately to keep it. Who has hammer in the first end is decided by a pre-game procedure that varies between competitions – check it before betting a match, because it moves the price.
Totals. Typically offered on points scored in a game. Curling games often end early when a team concedes a position it cannot recover from, and operators handle settlement of conceded games differently, so read the rules on any total before you back it.
What We Do Not Know Yet
Plainly: everything about the field. Provincial and territorial playdowns have not been held. No 2027 Scotties entry is confirmed. There are no current-season results for any team because the season has not started.
Any content naming Scotties contenders in August is guessing at which rinks will win playdowns five months from now. The useful move is to bookmark the January playdown period – that is when the field takes shape and when the information that actually decides this market becomes available.

This is a process pick because no other kind is honest in August. The Scotties has a structural feature that makes its outright unusually attractive relative to other curling markets: a long round robin, a field composed of teams that have just proven something competitively, and a February date that gives you an entire autumn of form to work from. That combination means the outright is bettable on evidence rather than reputation. The early-round match markets, by contrast, contain the mismatches that come from guaranteed provincial representation, and short prices on lopsided games are rarely where the value is. Get your position in the outright once you can see the field.
