TSITSIPAS

Day 2 of the first round. Court and start time are set by the daily order of play.

This is the tie that would headline almost any other section of the bracket, and the draw has buried it in the first round. Player Analysis

Arthur Fils

Fils is 22 and arrives as one of the hottest players in the sport. He won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati this summer, beating Frances Tiafoe in the final, and has pushed himself to the edge of the world’s top ten. That is a significant recovery from a back injury that cost him much of 2025.

The weapons are obvious: explosive movement, a huge forehand and a serve that has improved enough to give him free points. The open question is whether he can manage best-of-five Grand Slam pressure, which is a different discipline from a two-week Masters run. New York is where he finds out.

Key Storyline: Cincinnati champion, seeded 10th, still looking for a Grand Slam breakthrough

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas has been through a difficult couple of seasons, with injuries and inconsistency dropping him well down the rankings from a career high of world No. 3. There are signs of a turn: he won the ATP 250 title in Gstaad in July and now works with Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams’ longtime former coach.

The awkward statistic is venue-specific. Despite reaching finals at both Roland-Garros and the Australian Open, Tsitsipas has never advanced beyond the third round at the US Open. His serve-and-forehand combination can still dominate matches and his willingness to come forward gives Fils a different problem from most baseline opponents, but the record here is what it is.

Key Storyline: A two-time major finalist who has never been past the third round in New York

Key Betting Angles

The tactical crux is the Tsitsipas one-handed backhand. Fils will run around his own backhand to hammer forehands into that corner, and if he can pin Tsitsipas there before opening the court, he controls the geometry of the whole match. Tsitsipas has to prevent that pattern becoming predictable by serving well and moving forward.

Against that, there is a real experience gap. Tsitsipas has played deep into majors many times and Fils has not. If this reaches a fourth or fifth set, that history starts to matter, and it is the single best argument for a Tsitsipas set handicap even if you do not fancy him to win the match.

Our Prediction

Cole’s Pick: Arthur Fils to win in four sets

Momentum, firepower and confidence all sit with the Frenchman, and the Cincinnati title is the most recent and most relevant evidence in this matchup. Tsitsipas has the quality to take a set and the experience to make it uncomfortable, but his record at this specific tournament argues against him going the distance. This is the most competitive first-round tie in the draw, and the games total is where the value sits.

Confidence: medium on the match winner, high that this goes at least four sets
