BELGIUM vs SENEGAL Analysis
Belgium topped Group G despite a nervy tournament. They drew 1–1 with Egypt on Matchday 1, held Iran to a 0–0 draw on Matchday 2, and then demolished New Zealand 5–1 to secure top spot. That New Zealand performance — five goals, Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings, Romelu Lukaku leading the line — is the Belgium everyone expected to see all along.
De Bruyne is 34 and this is almost certainly his last World Cup. He played out of his skin against New Zealand. When Belgium have the ball and De Bruyne has time, they can punish any team. The concern is that the opening two performances lacked energy and conviction. Against a sharp Senegal side, Belgium cannot afford another off day.
Team news: De Bruyne and Lukaku both started all three group games and are fit. Thibaut Courtois is reliable in goal. Full squad available.
Senegal were brilliant in flashes. They beat Iraq 5–0, lost to France 3–1, and were edged out by Norway 3–2 when a draw would have given them second place in Group I. They finished third with three points. Sadio Mané remains the central figure — still dangerous at this level, still capable of creating something from nothing.
The 5–0 win over Iraq was emphatic but Iraq were the weakest team at this tournament. The France defeat showed their defensive vulnerability. Against Belgium’s quality in midfield, Senegal will have to be exceptional to progress. They have the pace on the break to worry Belgium, particularly on the left side where Ismaïla Sarr can run at defenders.
Team news: Mané fit and leading the attack. Sarr is the wide threat. Kalidou Koulibaly anchors the defensive unit.
What to Know Before You Bet
De Bruyne was unstoppable against New Zealand. Three assists, total control. When De Bruyne is at that level, Belgium are a different animal. Senegal’s midfield will be asked to cut off his supply lines — a significant challenge.
Senegal scored eight goals in three group games. They are not a defensive side. They want to play. That suits Belgium, who come alive when the game opens up. A cagey game of small margins is more dangerous for Belgium than an open contest.
Belgium drew two of their first three group games. That inconsistency is the real concern. They were flat against Iran. Against a Senegal side with pace and energy, Belgium need to start well. If Senegal score first, the game becomes interesting.
Romelu Lukaku thrives against African opposition. Physical, powerful, intelligent off the ball. Senegal’s centre-backs are good but Lukaku is at a different level. He will be well-served by De Bruyne if Belgium replicate the New Zealand display. Line shop across all knockout matches at our world cup betting hub before you place.
BELGIUM vs SENEGAL Prediction
This is the tightest of the Round of 32 fixtures. Belgium have the quality but they have been inconsistent. Senegal have the pace and the firepower to cause a genuine upset. Mané against this Belgian backline is a real contest and Sarr on the left is a problem for the right side of Belgium’s defence.
But De Bruyne and Lukaku are the difference. When Belgium fire, they score goals. Senegal leave space on the counter. Belgium find two, concede one in a lively second half, and advance. A draw at the end of 90 minutes is a genuine possibility — do not dismiss it.
