How the 2026 World Cup Group Stage Works

The 2026 group stage runs June 11–28. Each of the 12 groups plays a six-match round-robin (every team faces the other three). Points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a defeat. Tiebreakers: goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head result, then drawing of lots.

The top two from each group advance automatically (24 teams). Additionally, the eight best third-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance, giving 32 teams in the Round of 32 — the tournament's first knockout round. This third-place rule creates tactical complexity in the final group matchday: teams might prioritize qualifying as a third-place team over an outright second-place finish in a tougher group.

Canada in Group B

Canada were drawn into Group B alongside Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar. The group stage is now complete. Canada finished second in Group B with 4 points — they drew 1–1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, beat Qatar 6–0 in Vancouver on June 19, then lost 2–1 to Switzerland at BC Place on June 24. Switzerland won the group with 7 points; Canada advanced as runners-up. Canada beat South Africa 1–0 in the Round of 32 on June 28 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (Eustaquio 90+2′), reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in their history before Morocco ended the run 3-0 on July 4.
